SENDY originated on the North Shore of Oahu and was founded upon the principles of ALOHA:
“Aloha Spirit” is the coordination of heart and mind within us, bringing each person to the Self, thinking and emoting good feelings toward others.
In the contemplation of Aloha, the following unuhi laulā loa may be used:
“Akahai”: kindness to be expressed with tenderness
“Lōkahi”: unity, to be expressed with harmony
“Ulu’olu”: agreeable, to be expressed with pleasantness
“Ha’aha’a”: humility, to be expressed with modesty
“Ahonui”: patience, to be expressed with perseverance
Aloha is more than a word of farewell or greeting; it means mutual regard and affection and extends warmth and caring with no obligation in return. Aloha is the essence of relationships in which each person is important to every other person for collective existence.
Aloha is the spirit in which we hope that all of our community members will conduct themselves.

Shaka
The "Shaka" sign is a hand gesture ubiquitous in Hawaiian culture and surf culture in general. It's a friendly and casual gesture made by extending the thumb and pinky finger while keeping the other fingers curled into the palm. It's often accompanied by a slight shaking or waving motion. The meaning behind the Shaka sign varies, but it's generally a gesture of aloha (love), friendship, and goodwill. It's used as a greeting, a way to say "hang loose," or to express thanks or appreciation.
Legend has it that the Shaka sign originated with a Hawaiian named Hamana Kalili, who lost his three middle fingers while working at Kahuku Sugar Mill in the early 1900s. His job as a presser was to feed sugar cane through the rollers to squeeze out the juice. One day, Kalili’s right hand got caught in the rollers, and his 3 middle fingers were crushed. After the accident, the plantation owners gave Kalili a job as a security officer on the train that ran between Sunset Beach and Kaaawa. He was to keep kids from jumping on the train for joy rides as it slowly approached and departed Kahuku Station. He’d wave the kids away with his thumb and pinky. The kids, in turn, adopted the gesture to signal to each other that Kalili was not around. From this, the Shaka emerged.
