Big Agnes: The Humble Beginning

Big Agnes Started with a Camping Trip

It all started when Bill Gamber, co-founder of Big Agnes, and his friends were on a camping trip in the Mount Zirkel Wilderness area of Colorado. During this excursion, they encountered a peak known as Big Agnes. Inspired by the beauty and spirit of outdoor exploration, they decided to name their budding outdoor gear company after this majestic peak.

Founded in 2001 in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, Big Agnes began its journey, from just a few employees in a small building with a few products. The group was on a mission to provide high-quality camping and outdoor equipment that could withstand the rigors of backcountry adventures. The company's founders were avid outdoor enthusiasts themselves, and they aimed to create gear that they would personally use and trust.

Big Agnes quickly gained recognition for its innovative and reliable outdoor gear, including backpacking tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, and camping accessories. The company's commitment to quality, durability, and user-centric design helped it establish a reputation among serious outdoor enthusiasts.

The company culture is a huge part of the formula. Big Agnes maintains its fun, inclusive, outdoor energy by hiring fun outdoorsy people, and who wouldn’t want to live and play in Steamboat Springs? Adventures have included trips to Asian factories, campouts and backpacking trips. Being active together is what bonds this crew, and it’s easy when the outdoors is just outside the door!

Over the years, expanding its product lineup and continuing to push the boundaries of outdoor gear technology, Big Agnes has maintained its vision of inspiring and equipping folks for outdoor adventure and providing gear in a sustainable manner. Sustainability is a top priority, from sourcing recycled product materials to using solar and wind to power their company owned buildings. They know first hand that protecting the environment means more enjoyment in nature.

The company remains headquartered in Steamboat Springs, now, with many more hard working, hard playing employees who continue to draw inspiration from the surrounding wilderness and outdoor culture.

From its humble beginnings, Big Agnes has stayed true to its core values of adventure, quality, and innovation, earning the trust and loyalty of outdoor enthusiasts around the world. It continues to be a force in the industry, demonstrating that success and sustainability are a winning combo.
