How do I convert a SUP to be rowable?
Converting a stand-up paddleboard (SUP) to accommodate rowing requires some modifications to the board. It’s well worth it to be able to explore new waterways!
Here's a general guide:
Choose an SUP that’s stable and has enough length and width to accommodate rowing. Longer and wider boards provide better stability and are more suitable for rowing.
Gather the necessary materials for the conversion, including a rowing rig, oarlocks, rowing oars, and any additional hardware or tools needed for installation.
Purchase a rowing rig designed to attach to a stand-up paddleboard. This rig typically consists of a seat, footrests, and a sliding seat mechanism. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to securely attach the rowing rig to the paddleboard.
Attach oarlocks to the rowing rig at a suitable position for rowing. Oarlocks are the pivoting mechanisms that hold the oars in place and allow them to pivot smoothly.
Adjust the seat and footrests on the rig to ensure a comfortable rowing position. The seat should be positioned so that you can reach the oarlocks easily, and the footrests should provide support and stability.
Select rowing oars of an appropriate length for the width of your paddleboard and your height. Rowing oars typically come in various lengths and blade styles, so choose ones that suit your rowing style.
Once the rowing rig, oarlocks, seat, footrests, and oars are installed, take the converted paddleboard out for a test row. Adjust the positioning of the seat, footrests, and oarlocks as needed to optimize your rowing experience.
Always wear a personal flotation device (PFD), familiarize yourself with proper rowing techniques, safety precautions, and the waterway you’ll be exploring. And always tell someone where you're going...
